Daring Baker's Challenge: Perfect Party Cake

This month's Daring Baker's Challenge: Dorie Greenspan's Perfect Party Cake.

Okay, so the cake is tall and beautiful, and i had a blast making it. But i have to say, i did not enjoy eating it.

I have two or three objections to this cake. a.) the recipe didn't call for any salt. Weird. I added some anyway. b.) the cake was waaaaaaaaay too sweet!!. And c.) i am not partial to buttercream. It makes me feel like my arteries are clogging up with every bite. Yes, I know its probably just all in my head, but nevertheless thats how it is.

So i decided to make another version....just with layers of fresh berries and sweetened whipped cream. Yum. This cake was devoured before the day was out.

Your decoration is wonderful, I love the coconut only on the bottom and your roses are so pretty.

You do have a lovely cake.

Interesting you mention the salt--I remember thinking that as well when I made it...

oh wow! Your cake is just beautiful. You should be right proud. I agree with you, the cake was far too sweet and this particular buttercream, in my opinion, you could taste every ounce of the 3 sticks of butter it had. But yours... it really is gorgeous. Well done.

I figure by forgetting to put buttercream in between my layers, I saved my cake eaters some major fat calories! :)

I love those roses! They are so pretty :)

I wondered about the lack of salt too, but I left it alone as I was afraid of messing it up. And although I did love the buttercream, I did feel really guilty everytime I thought about the 3 sticks of butter in it. lol!
